Leticia Ingram from Basalt High School (BHS) has been selected as one of this year’s Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic Grosvenor Teacher Fellows in recognition of her commitment to geographic education.

Ingram is one of 45 highly respected educators from the United States and Canada selected for this year’s Grosvenor Teacher Fellowship Class. Ingram is currently an English language development, biology, and film teacher at Basalt High School and was the 2016 Colorado Teacher of the Year.

“When students see to what end of the world she’ll go to enrich her own teaching skills and knowledge, it’s an inspiration to all of us,” said BHS Principal Peter Mueller. “She shows students what possible when you set your mind to something.”

Starting later this year, the 2019 Fellows will begin their 10- to 23-day expeditions to locations across the globe, including Southeast Alaska, the High Arctic, the British and Irish Isles, the Canadian Maritimes, Central America, Antarctica, the Galápagos Islands, and the South Pacific. The global expeditions are designed to enhance the fellows’ geographic knowledge with hands-on, field-based experiences that they will bring back to their pre-K–12 classrooms, communities, and professional networks.

Ingram will travel to the High Arctic in June. She will begin her adventure in Oslo, Norway, then fly to Longyearbyen, Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago between mainland Norway and the North Pole. She’ll board an expedition ship to explore the archipelago, likely spotting polar bears, reindeer, and walruses along the way. Cruising in Svalbard’s fjords and getting up close to glaciers are also on her exciting agenda.

“I still cannot believe it,” said Ingram. “I keep pinching myself and asking if this is real. I am thrilled and honored to have this adventure of a lifetime. It will be an amazing hands-on experience that I can bring back to my students and community.”

Just over three years after voters approved a $122 million bond for the Roaring Fork Schools, the district has completed almost 20 construction projects on time and on budget. Because of this community investment and short construction timeline, students, staff, and community members are already enjoying the new and improved spaces.

At Glenwood Springs Elementary School (GSES), one of the largest projects in the bond program, Kindergarten Teacher Linsey Short explains how the new space has had a positive effect on student learning and the school community: "Our new space has really expanded the opportunities for community learning, independence, and student engagement. We are absolutely thrilled with our new school and feel so thankful to our community for their support."

The bond program touched every community in the Roaring Fork Schools. While the overall project list is lengthy, every school saw improvements in safety and security, learning environment modernizations, energy efficiency upgrades, and other general improvements.

Carbondale Middle School (CMS) Principal Jennifer Lamont explained how their renovated space is affecting the school: “Our new larger spaces, Ram Central in particular, have given us the needed room to conduct team building with our crews, as well as grade level community meetings. This allows for more active students and more active participation.


Bond highlights included building Riverview School, a new PreK-8 school serving Glenwood Springs; renovating and adding to GSES; major renovations in Basalt High School, Basalt Middle School, Red Brick at Basalt Elementary School, Carbondale Middle School, Bridges High School, Sopris Elementary School, Glenwood Middle School, and Glenwood High School; two new transportation centers; and acquiring land for a future school site to accommodate growth in Basalt. “We are fortunate to have communities that wanted improved facilities and then supported that goal through the bond measure,” said Roaring Fork Schools’ Chief Operating Officer Jeff Gatlin. “We are pleased to say that we have delivered on the promises we made to our communities as part of the strategic visioning process in 2014, the facilities master plan process in 2015, and then through the bond campaign.”

And community members and organizations are also directly benefiting from the improved spaces. GSES is seeing a wide variety of community use with everything from Cooking Matters class offerings and lifelong learning classes to youth sports and Folklorico classes.

"We are thrilled that we can now realize our goal of being a hub for the community, not only for our students who come from all over Glenwood Springs, but also for our families and community members who can utilize our spaces as a place to gather, learn, and build community," said GSES Principal Audrey Hazleton.

Included in the bond program were 66 units of staff housing in an effort to make living in the Roaring Fork Valley more affordable for our teachers and other staff members.

“Our community identified retaining and recruiting staff as a top priority--with affordable staff housing being a major obstacle--and then supported that in the bond measure. We are really grateful to have this kind of community support and follow-through,” said Gatlin. “Being able to provide affordable staff housing has already had a noticeable effect on our staff and the district at large.”

Roaring Fork High School’s (RFHS) Solana Teitler and Lux Andrade and Basalt High School’s (BHS) Steven Javier Garcia-Machuca have been selected to receive prestigious state and national full-ride scholarships.

Teitler is a recipient of the Boettcher Scholarship, which pays a full ride to any school in Colorado. Approximately 1,500 graduating high school seniors apply for the scholarship annually, and only 42 scholarships are awarded each year.

Andrade and Garcia-Machuca are two of 218 students from Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming who were selected as 2019 Daniels Scholars. The Daniels Fund Scholarship pays a full ride to any school in the country. This year, approximately 1,850 applications were submitted.

"We are so incredibly proud of both Lux and Solana,” said RFHS Principal Brett Stringer. “They are two shining examples of how caring and hard-working our students are at Roaring Fork High School. Both of them are in constant pursuit of knowledge and opportunities to better the world around them."

Garcia-Machuca also received the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation College Scholarship, which is a highly competitive national undergraduate scholarship program that will allow Garcia-Machuca to attend his university for free.

“Steven is one of the most motivated people I have ever met. He possesses a unique combination of academic excellence, social acumen, and leadership abilities that make him one of the most well-rounded students I’ve encountered.” said Liz Penzel, the BHS college and career counselor.

Superintendent Rob Stein applauds these students and all of the staff who support student success.

"Congrats to these seniors for this great accomplishment and to all the others who are achieving great success in other ways. Having our students be selected for these prestigious scholarships reflects the hard work and support of the many staff members who help our students thrive," Stein said.

RFHS teacher Carmen McCracken was one of the Colorado teachers recognized for their impact and dedication to students.

“We know that teachers are a critical component in the success of Colorado’s students,” said Tiffany Anderson, programs director for Boettcher Foundation. “For every student that leads a club or organization, there is a teacher who works late to supervise that organization. For every student who takes an independent study, there is a teacher who is spending extra hours guiding and supporting that student.”
